Six Steps to Teaching Academic Vocabulary based on Robert J. Marzano's work:
1. The teacher provides a description, explanation or example of the term.

-Break down the words using Roots
-Sean's Digital Storytelling Page
2. The student restates the description of the term in their own words.
-Smartboard Template (4 Square)
-Create Word templates that students can use – 4 Square
-Podcasting
3. The student creates a nonlinguistic representation of the term through a picture, symbol or graphic
-Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. Wordle
-Use pictures, symbols or graphic representations – Addition (Kidspiration),
-Food Chain (Kidspiration)
-Climate (Word),
-Frustrated (Word)
-Free, online version of Inspiration with a twist...Webspiration
-Create PowerPoint templates that students can use - 4 Square
-Use the Frayer Model, Frayer Template (word) and other graphic organizers.
-Tell a story that integrates the term; Photo Story Example (or iPhoto for Mac)
-Download Photo Story and Windows Media Player
4. Have the students do activities that help them add to their knowledge of the term.
